Cross-Party Oireachtas Group on Pregnancy and Infant Loss
Pregnancy loss is a major public health issue in Ireland.
An estimated 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage and it is estimated to be 3.9 times more common than breast cancer diagnoses. Research has identified ways to improve supports and care for individuals affected by miscarriage.
More babies are stillborn than people die on our roads and prevention is possible.

On March 25th 2026 there was a well attended AV Room Briefing to discuss a proposed Certificate of Loss to acknowledge pregnancies that end under 23 weeks in Ireland. Speakers included the Pregnancy Loss Research Group (UCC), Féileacáin and the Miscarriage Association who shared personal stories along with insights from development of such a scheme within Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Members of the The Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) shared their perspective on additional supports required (including paid statutory leave) for those experiencing pregnancy loss and/or fertility treatment in the workplace. They joined our quarterly meeting on March 24th 2026 to share personal and emotional stories about pregnancy loss and infertility.
Cross-Party Oireachtas Group on Pregnancy and Infant Loss met with Minister Burke on January 17th 2026 to discuss pregnancy-loss-related leave and the urgent need for better, more compassionate supports for families.
Leinster House was lit up in blue & pink on the 15th October for the Wave of Light, a global event to to remember babies lost during pregnancy or infancy.
On March 25th 2026, there will be a presentation in the AV Room of Leinster House about Pregnancy Loss Certificates that have been implemented or approved in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Australia.
The Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025 was debated at the Seanad on July 9th 2025.
