The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth commissioned a project to examine the workplace experiences of people coping with pregnancy loss. Informed by international best practice, the project put forward recommendations for formal or informal support mechanisms that could be introduced in the workplace to better support working people experiencing pregnancy loss. Support mechanisms may include the provision of leave, flexible working arrangements, or other workplace policies.
Findings:
85% found it difficult to return to work following pregnancy loss
77% took time off work, mostly sick leave
95% would take leave relating to pregnancy loss if it was available
Most participants disclosed their pregnancy loss in the workplace
Organizational supports should be introduced to facilitate an easier return to work
Need for statutory leave which is available to all workers and does not affect sick leave, inclusive of termination of pregnancy and with provision for partners
Phased return, adjusted workload, working form home, flexibility helpful.
